Libertarianer som vill bygga ett (eller snarare en hel hög) Atlantis på världshaven – kan man annat än älska idén? The Seasteading Institute, med Milton Friedmans sonson (!) som executive director, beskriver själv tanken bakom konceptet såhär:
Seasteaders believe that government shouldn’t be like the operating system industry, with few choices and high customer-lock-in. Instead, we envision a startup sector for government, with many small groups experimenting with innovative ideas as they compete for citizens and businesses. Instead of making contentious decisions on divisive issues for tens or hundreds of millions of people at once, we seek to shrink government so that each group can have what it wants. And while they enjoy their favored government, the world will see how those rules work in practice, adding to the body of knowledge about policies & institutions, and progressing the technology of government.
Onekligen kittlande – och lagom galet. Reasons Bryan Doherty skriver i dag såhär om de ambitiösa nybyggarna:
If it works, the effect will be as salubrious in terms of customer satisfaction as the ability to enter and switch is in any other industry. In escaping normal civilization, libertarians could find out that their true place is bringing to politics the key benefit of free markets: wider and freer competition and the quality that comes with it.
