Not a single one of the fifty largest firms in Sweden in 2000 was founded after 1969 (figure 7.7). This may be compared to the very different situation in the United States in recent decades, where new and fast-growing firms are generating not just most of the jobs but also the new industries (Audretsch and Thurik, 2000). In 2002 roughly 60 per cent of the fifty largest firms in the United States had been founded later than 1970.
