Min sista krönika i Expressen kom ut för ett par veckor sedan men för min egen möjlighet att överblicka kaos länkar jag till den här: Bättre och bättre. Rubriken är missvisande, men kontentan är att det antagligen blir bra i det långa loppet även om allt på kort sikt kan gå åt helvete. Med världsekonomin alltså; Gary Becker har en bra artikel om detta dystra ämne i WSJ.

För övrigt går årets Eli F Heckscher-tal av stapeln i dag. Talare är i år Joel Mokyr, som skrivit den mycket läsvärda boken The Lever of Riches, där han gör caset att teknologisk kreativet är nyckeln till den moderna världen. Fast på senare tid ska han ha blivit mer McCloskeyesk, om jag förstår saker och ting rätt.

Today, generally, Adam Smith is claimed by the Right, Darwin by the Left. In the American South and Midwest, where Smith’s individualist, libertarian, small-government philosophy is all the rage, Darwin is reviled for his contradiction of creation. Yet if the market needs no central planner, why should life need an intelligent designer? Conversely, in the average European biol- ogy laboratory you will find fervent believers in the individualist, emergent, decentralised properties of genomes who prefer dirigiste determinism to bring order to the economy.

There are two levers–the universe’s state before you make a decision, and the laws that govern transitions to the next state. Demonstrate that you can pull one or the other and you have demonstrated free will. Failing to do so keeps you within the natural, causal cycle of [pre-existing state + physical law = outcome], which are all things humans have absolutely no control over. Free will is an illusion.

In short, the belief in free will, as propagated by religion and a religion-based criminal justice system, retards human progress by giving a backdoor justification for selfishness. The reason we are seeing so much resistance to policies that help the have-nots, at the expense of the haves (e.g. healthcare reform), is in significant part due to the belief that the have-nots deserve their position, as a direct result of their poor choices.

Minn biff är egentligen följande: att vilja hjälpa människor av den anledningen att det inte finns någon fri vilja är inte det – ehrm – ett fritt val? Eller är valet att hysa denna och den motsatta (uppenbarligen genomvidriga) åsikten också deterministiskt betingad? I så fall borde man väl åtminstone ta och spara på superlativen i skildringen av hur vidriga de religiösa frivilje-typerna är – de kan ju inte hjälpa det. Eller? Det påminner lite om den ack så dömande astrologen: varför är han så hjärtlös – jag kan väl inte rå för när jag blev född?

Vad som hände om man gjorde allt enligt regelboken blev tydligt när två sheriffer, Warren Evans från Michigan och Dennis Randle från Indiana ville hjälpa till. Evans struntade i sin egen guvernörs uppmaning att be om tillstånd från FEMA, och åkte till New Orleans med 33 mannar och nio lastbilar med förnödenheter. Randle följde däremot protokollet, begravdes i pappersarbete, och tog sig aldrig till New Orleans.

When you kill to prove you’re serious, you’re validating the threat against the characters and the virtue of their cause. Harry Potter and A Game of Thrones are legendary for doing this kind of killing with style, but one of my favorite examples is actually The Passage, by Justin Cronin. The Passage uses the deaths of people to set the mood and state the severity of the circumstances—and not one of them is cliché. With every character death, it feels as though it is both the end of that character’s arc, and a strong statement in the plot.
